A thrilling NHL encounter unfolded on Thursday, with the Columbus Blue Jackets securing their third consecutive victory, a 4-1 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks. This win marks a turning point for the Blue Jackets under their new coach, Rick Bowness, who has guided them to back-to-back wins since taking over from Dean Evason.
The game showcased the prowess of Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson, who each contributed a goal and an assist to their team's success. Elvis Merzlikins, the Blue Jackets' goaltender, made 30 saves, earning his first win since December 4th and a much-needed boost in confidence.
"It's a new beginning with fresh energy," Merzlikins said, reflecting on the coaching change. "The guys are eager to discover what's expected of them."
However, the Canucks' losing streak now extends to nine games (0-7-2), including all six on their recent road trip. Brock Boeser, who scored the Canucks' lone goal, emphasized the need for hard work to overcome these challenging times.
"We must match their intensity from the get-go," Adam Foote, the Canucks' coach, acknowledged. "They dominated the battle, putting us on the back foot."
Bowness, too, was critical of his team's first-period performance but praised their resilience. "We want to be a pressure team, both with and without the puck," he explained. "We want to deny them time and space."
The Blue Jackets' lead grew to 2-0 in the second period when Marchenko outmuscled Marcus Pettersson and scored with a wrist shot to the upper right corner. Zach Werenski then extended the lead to 3-0 with a wrist shot from the right circle, assisted by Johnson.
Boeser cut the deficit to 3-1 on the power play, scoring from the left circle off a pass from Elias Pettersson. But Johnson restored the two-goal lead in the third period, scoring on the rush with an assist from Boone Jenner, who recorded his 200th NHL assist in the process.
The game also saw the return of Blue Jackets defenseman Erik Gudbranson after missing 38 games due to a hip injury. He made an immediate impact with three hits, two shots on goal, and two takeaways in just over 16 minutes of ice time.
"It's a great feeling to be back," Gudbranson said. "I'm eager to contribute to the team's success and help turn things around."
With this win, the Blue Jackets improve to 21-19-7, while the Canucks drop to 16-26-5. The Canucks will aim to break their losing streak as they return home, while the Blue Jackets will look to continue their winning streak on the road.
