The recent implementation of the EU's Entry Exit System (EES) has sparked a debate about the balance between security measures and the efficiency of border control processes. This new system, designed to enhance security within the Schengen area, has inadvertently caused significant delays for travelers, particularly those from non-EU countries.
One of the key issues lies in the complexity of the EES process. The requirement for non-EU citizens to register fingerprints and photos upon arrival, and then have this information checked upon departure, has led to lengthy queues at passport control. This is especially true at popular tourist destinations like Rome, where the airport's Chief Aviation Officer, Ivan Bassato, has expressed concerns about the system's impact on the overall passenger experience.
"We are not at the point where you have the same quality of the process [as] before the EES," Bassato said, highlighting the increased time taken for UK nationals to pass through the border, rising from 7 to 20 minutes. This delay is a result of the system's complexity and the need for integration with e-gates, which, despite their cost, have proven impractical for large volumes of passengers.
The situation is further exacerbated by the presence of bugs in the system. As Superintendent Pedro Oliveira, in charge of border control at Faro airport in Portugal, explained, "[EES] makes us very dependent on the technology... sometimes something that happens in Warsaw affects our system here." These technological glitches have led to unexpected delays and, in some cases, crashes affecting all member states simultaneously.
While the European Commission (EC) maintains that disruption is limited in most EU airports, the impact on individual travelers and the potential for missed flights cannot be overlooked. Ryanair, for instance, has warned passengers to expect extended waits due to the "failed EES rollout."
This raises a deeper question about the effectiveness of such security measures. While enhanced security is undoubtedly important, the practical implications of these measures on the travel experience and the potential for disruption cannot be ignored. As Bassato suggests, there is an urgent need to address the system's complexities and technological bugs to ensure a smoother and more efficient border control process.
In my opinion, the EES implementation highlights the delicate balance between security and practicality. While the intention behind the system is understandable, the unintended consequences on travelers' experiences and the potential for disruption cannot be overlooked. It is a reminder that, in our pursuit of enhanced security, we must also prioritize the efficiency and effectiveness of our systems to ensure a seamless travel experience for all.
