The Red Sox might have just found their secret weapon, a towering pitcher who could dramatically alter their rotation! Meet Johan Oviedo, a 6-foot-6, 275-pound right-hander who embodies the term 'wild card' on the Red Sox roster. This 27-year-old arrived from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade last month, and he's now a leading contender for that crucial No. 5 rotation spot as spring training gets underway.
Given the investment the Red Sox made to acquire him, it's a safe bet that Oviedo will be given a serious chance to earn that spot. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow even hinted at this, stating that Oviedo was a target they'd been eyeing for quite some time. "Oviedo was a guy that we had targeted pretty early in the offseason," Breslow shared. "We feel like coming off Tommy John stuff had ticked up, the fastball profile was really intriguing, it had gained a ton of playability. So felt like he makes a ton of sense to continuing to add to our pitching depth."
After missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, Oviedo made a strong comeback in early August with the Pirates. In just nine starts, he posted an impressive 3.57 ERA with 42 strikeouts over 40.1 innings. This performance followed a breakout 2023 season where he started 32 games, logging a 4.31 ERA across 177.2 innings.
Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey is particularly enthusiastic, describing Oviedo's stuff as "elite" and highlighting his potential for both a solid floor and an even higher ceiling. "(He) had a bright year last year when he was up with Pittsburgh and (we’ll) continue to help him grow into the pitcher we know he can be and wants to be," Bailey remarked. "Really looking forward to seeing him develop over the next two years and see what the ceiling is, because there is so much to love about him."
But here's where it gets controversial: Is Oviedo's command a major red flag? While his 95.4 mph fastball is solid, it's his 7.4 feet of extension – ranking in the 98th percentile across MLB last season – that truly stands out. This allows him to release the ball closer to the plate, giving hitters less time to react. However, his 13.5% walk rate last season, and an 11% career mark, indicate a weakness in control.
