A community-owned pub, the George & Dragon in Hudswell, North Yorkshire, is seeking a new tenant to keep its doors open and its unique spirit alive. The story of the George & Dragon began in 2008 when it closed its doors, but a determined community group stepped in to save it. Through a collective effort, Hudswell Community Pub Ltd (HCP) raised an impressive £200,000 by selling shares, and in 2010, the pub reopened, bringing life and joy back to the village.
But here's where it gets controversial... The current tenant is stepping down, and HCP is on a mission to find a new tenant who can continue the pub's legacy. Heather Swettenham, the community pub secretary, emphasizes the vital role pubs play in small villages like Hudswell.
"It's more than just a pub; it's the heart of the village. It brings people together, creates a sense of belonging, and welcomes both locals and tourists alike."
Mrs. Swettenham highlights how the pub's warm and friendly atmosphere, combined with its excellent beer and food, has become a selling point for the village, attracting new residents and visitors.
And this is the part most people miss... The George & Dragon isn't just a place for a drink and a meal; it's a community hub. It houses a small volunteer-run village shop, offering essential items, and has community allotments just beyond the beer garden. There's even a little library within the pub, making it a true community space.
The success of the George & Dragon has inspired other community projects in Hudswell, located on the edge of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Hudswell Community Charity has transformed the redundant St. Michael's Church into a walkers' hostel and has also been instrumental in developing affordable housing in the village.
Mrs. Swettenham believes they've been fortunate with their previous tenant and is optimistic about finding the right person to continue the pub's success.
"We're looking for someone who can not only run a great pub business but also embrace the community aspect. Someone who can foster that sense of belonging and continue the pub's reputation for good beer and food."
She adds, "It's not just a pub; it's a meeting place, a place where people can connect and enjoy each other's company."
The board of HCP is committed to keeping the pub open while preserving its traditional charm, offering a warm, dog-friendly, and cozy atmosphere that locals and visitors alike crave.
