Romeo Doubs' Future with the Green Bay Packers: A Complex Contractual Landscape
The Green Bay Packers' 2025 season saw them enter with two starting receivers, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, both on the final years of their contracts. Drafted in 2022, Watson was taken 34th overall, while Doubs was selected 132nd. Before Watson's ACL tear in the 2024 season, he signed a one-year extension worth $11 million plus incentives. In contrast, Doubs has yet to secure a new contract.
According to sources, Doubs' camp attempted to negotiate an extension around the combine last offseason, but the Packers rejected these requests due to concerns about his concussion history, which included two in the second half of the 2024 season. The situation intensified when the Packers drafted first-round pick Matthew Golden and third-round pick Savion Williams in April, leading to a logjam at the receiver position.
As of 2026, Doubs' contract has expired, and Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks are all in contract years. The Packers are likely to retain only one or two of these players long-term, considering their cap situation over the next three years. The assumption is that Doubs will test the market as a free agent, potentially securing a deal similar to Khalil Shakir's $13 million per year contract. If this is the case, the Packers may receive a 2027 fifth-round compensatory draft pick for losing Doubs, provided they don't offset the loss with an outside signing.
When asked about his future with the team, Doubs responded, 'I would leave that unknown. I would love to be a Green Bay Packer, but I'm just aware of this business. I understand how things go.'
The Packers received several trade offers for Doubs throughout 2025, but none were deemed worth the offset of his 2025 contributions and the 2027 compensatory pick. Some teams even offered lower draft picks in the 2026 class than the 2027 comp pick, hoping for a discount. The situation at receiver was challenging early on due to injuries, with Watson and Reed on injured reserve and Williams dealing with a season-long foot injury.
Over four years, Doubs, a fourth-round selection, has caught 202 balls for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns. In 2025, he set a career high in receiving yards (724) and finished second in receptions (55) and receiving touchdowns (6), just behind his 2023 campaign. With Doubs expected to be out, the Packers' starting outside receiver in 2026 will be Watson and one of Wicks or Golden, with Reed in the slot, and Bo Melton and Williams as backups.
