In a notable development, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has reached out to Chinese President Xi Jinping, requesting him to take on the role of mediator in addressing the ongoing North Korean nuclear dilemma and fostering better relations between North and South Korea. This conversation took place during Lee's recent visit to China, where he met with Xi for a summit in Beijing on January 5, 2026.
While speaking to reporters accompanying him on the Shanghai portion of his trip, Lee revealed that he urged Xi to utilize China's influence to help facilitate peace talks. He shared that Xi responded by emphasizing the need for patience when dealing with North Korea's complex issues. "We’re making efforts but all our channels with North Korea are completely blocked so we can’t communicate at all. I told him it would be beneficial for China to play the role of a mediator for peace," Lee remarked during his televised address. "President Xi acknowledged our efforts and reiterated that patience is essential."
As the primary trading partner and a significant diplomatic ally of North Korea, China holds a unique position to influence the situation. Both South Korea and the United States have consistently appealed to China to leverage its distinct relationship with North Korea to encourage a revival of stalled diplomatic negotiations or to push for denuclearization. However, China has repeatedly called for restraint from all parties involved and has been reluctant to support increased sanctions against North Korea, even as the country conducts missile tests that contravene United Nations resolutions.
North Korea has shown little interest in engaging in dialogue with either South Korea or the United States, opting instead to expand its nuclear capabilities following the breakdown of high-stakes negotiations between its leader Kim Jong Un and former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019.
Since assuming office in June of last year, President Lee's administration has made significant attempts to reopen communication channels with North Korea, yet these overtures have largely gone unanswered. In July, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of Kim Jong Un and a prominent North Korean official, criticized the current South Korean administration. She stated that its unwavering trust in the U.S. alliance and antagonistic stance toward North Korea rendered it no different from the previous conservative government.
In a separate meeting on January 6, 2026, Chinese Premier Li Qiang echoed the sentiment of patience, reinforcing the idea that neighboring countries should play constructive roles in the matter. "We requested China to act in such a capacity, and China has expressed its commitment to making efforts in this regard," Lee added.
During discussions, Lee outlined his approach of advocating for a phased and gradual process of denuclearization by North Korea, proposing that such steps could be reciprocated with corresponding benefits. He emphasized the importance of initially freezing North Korea's nuclear and missile programs to prevent further growth of its arsenal and potential nuclear proliferation, a perspective that he noted was shared by Chinese officials.
"Allowing the current situation to persist would represent a setback for both Northeast Asia and the broader international community, as North Korea continues to develop its nuclear weapons," Lee stated.
Despite this, North Korea has firmly declared that it will not entertain denuclearization talks again. There is widespread concern among experts that if North Korea were to receive incentives for partial denuclearization, it could jeopardize future diplomatic engagements while maintaining a substantial portion of its nuclear capabilities, particularly after securing much-needed relief from sanctions.
