In modern times, it serves as the primary route for supertankers carrying oil and gas from key producers such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, and Iran. The majority of this oil is destined for Asian markets, including China, Iran's sole remaining oil customer.
The Impact of Disruption
Any disruption to traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has severe consequences for the global oil trade. Hakan Kaya, a senior portfolio manager at Neuberger Berman, emphasizes the gravity of the situation, stating that even a partial slowdown lasting a week or two could be absorbed by oil companies. However, a full or near-full closure lasting a month or more would drive crude oil prices, currently around $80, into the triple digits, and European natural gas prices towards or above the crisis levels seen in 2022.
The Iran Factor
Iran's role in the Strait of Hormuz has been a source of controversy and concern. The country has attacked several ships in the strait and issued threats to any vessels attempting to pass through, effectively closing it. Iranian Brig. Gen. Ebrahim Jabbari, an adviser to the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, declared, "The Strait of Hormuz is closed." He vowed that any ships passing through would be set on fire.
Past Tensions and Conflict
Iran has a history of harassing shipping through the strait during times of tension and conflict. During the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, both sides attacked tankers and other vessels, using naval mines to shut down traffic at various points. However, Iran had not carried out repeated threats to close the waterway altogether since the 1980s, even during the 12-day war in 2022 when Israel and the U.S. bombarded Iran's key nuclear and military sites.
Global Shipping Impact
The escalating situation has led global shippers to suspend operations in the area. Major shipping companies like Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, CMA-CGM, and MSC have issued service alerts, halting vessel crossings in the Strait of Hormuz until further notice. Tom Goldsby, logistics chairman at the University of Tennessee, explains the situation, stating that "no one wants to navigate it, and there's no insurer willing to support any transport going through there right now."
As a result, numerous ships are stranded in the Gulf, unable to move, while others that were en route to replace them are now anchored or headed elsewhere.

According to Kplr, a data and analytics firm, there were approximately 70 laden oil tankers and 75 clean tankers carrying refined oil products in the Mideast Gulf on Monday, seemingly waiting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This is roughly twice the usual number, as per Kplr's estimates. Meanwhile, about 60 tankers are in a holding pattern just outside the Mideast Gulf, east of the strait.
