US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has called on power grid operators to be ready with backup generation resources. The Department of Energy estimates an impressive 35 GW of unused backup generation available nationwide, which could be crucial in mitigating blackouts and reducing costs for millions of Americans during this challenging winter storm.
The Southwest Power Pool, a regional grid operator, has reported real-time spot wholesale prices soaring above $200 per megawatt-hour due to congestion on high-voltage power lines. However, an abundance of wind generation in certain areas has caused wholesale prices to go negative, with wind generators paying the grid to take their excess electricity.
